Card Grading — How It Works, What It Costs, and When It's Worth It

Card grading is the hobby's biggest money decision: pay a professional company $15–$100+ to judge your card's condition, and the grade it comes back with can multiply its value — or lock in a loss. Here's the complete picture, honestly: how grading works, what it really costs, and how to know before you spend a dime whether your card is worth grading.

What card grading actually is

A third-party company (PSA, SGC, BGS, CGC) inspects your card, assigns it a 1–10 grade for condition, and seals it in a tamper-evident slab. The grade is a trusted condition score the whole market prices against.

The four things graders score

Centering, corners, edges, and surface — every grade from every company comes down to those four. SlabVision scores the same four for free, before you pay anyone.

The honest cost picture

Fees run $10–$100+ per card depending on company and turnaround, plus shipping both ways. The full cost breakdown — and why the total is always higher than the sticker fee — is on the cost guide.

Know your grade before you pay

The single biggest grading mistake is submitting blind. A free pre-grade predicts the grade in seconds — so the only cards you ever pay to grade are the ones that will come back high.

Card Grading FAQ

What is card grading?

Professional card grading sends your card to a company like PSA, SGC, or BGS, which scores its condition on a 1–10 scale and seals it in a protective slab with the grade on the label. The slab and grade let buyers trust the condition without seeing the card in person.

Does grading increase a card's value?

For the right card, dramatically — a PSA 10 can sell for many multiples of the raw card. For the wrong card, the fees exceed any gain. That's why you pre-grade and check the comps at each grade level before submitting anything.

How long does card grading take?

Weeks to months depending on the service level you pay for — economy tiers are cheapest and slowest; express tiers cost multiples more. Pre-grading online takes seconds and is free.

Can I grade cards myself?

You can't assign an official grade — only the grading companies can. But a free pre-grade shows you the projected grade and its confidence level in seconds, which is what actually saves you money.
