Sealed, CIB, or loose — the tiered standard every game grade and price hangs on.
Sealed
Factory-wrapped, never opened. The highest tier — WATA and VGA grades matter most here, and sealed copies of classics have become blue-chip collectibles. Condition of the wrap, seams and box corners all count.
CIB — Complete in Box
Cartridge or disc, manual, and box — all original. The collector's standard for a 'complete' copy. Box condition and manual presence drive most of the value gap.
Loose / Cart only
The game itself, no extras. The most affordable way to play the classics — and the tier where condition and label wear separate a beater from a display piece.

Keep the collection museum-grade.
Contacts & cleaning
Isopropyl alcohol (70%+) and a cotton swab on cart contacts, always with the power off. A clean contact set fixes most 'dead cart' moments — no games lost.
Battery saves
Save batteries die after 10–15 years. Replace them before they leak — a leaking battery corrodes the board and turns a $200 cart into parts. Keep the save backed up first.
Disc & box care
Discs by the edge, never the surface; resurface only as a last resort. Boxes in protectors, upright, never stacked under weight.
Storage
Room temperature, steady humidity, zero sunlight. Carts upright in bins with dividers; sealed games in acrylic or at least bagged away from dust and moisture.
